This aromatherapy play dough is a great way to potentially change a little one’s mood.
From energising to relaxing each essential oil has it very own properties that you can give to the play dough.
When you are feeling a little overwhelmed from busy days and too much technology, reach for the play dough it will give you hours of fun making it and playing with it.
Just adding a few drops of essential oils to the play dough can really make all the difference to a little one’s state of mind and perhaps behaviour.
I coordinated the colour to the scent and chose each oil for its properties:
Yellow – Lemon – uplifting
Purple – Lavender – relaxation/calming
Orange – Sweet Orange – relaxation/positive emotions
Aromatherapy Play Dough Recipe
2.5 cups or 40 tablespoons flour 1 cup or 16 tablespoons salt ¾ cup or 236ml warm water 1.5 tablespoons vegetable oil Food colouring (red, yellow, blue) Essential oils 2 drops each of Lemon, Lavender, Sweet Orange
Begin by having your child mix the flour and salt in a bowl, then add the water. You should knead and squeeze the dough until you reach a clay like consistency.
Adjust as needed with more water, more flour etc. until you get your perfect consistency.
Get 3 zip lock bags and add ½ tablespoon of a non-scented vegetable oil to each of the bags. I like sunflower oil but anything that isn’t strongly scented will do. Then add your food colouring and essential oils and your play dough, secure the ziplock then let the kids knead it in the bag to avoid the extra coloured mess.
Kids young and old love seeing their plain play dough come to life with colour!!
Add a maximum of 2 drops of essential oil per bag, I would always put 1 drop in first and assess how strong the smell is, you can always add one more! Any more than 2 drops and it will be overpowering to little people.
Enjoy hours of play with your homemade aromatherapy play dough!
Package the play dough in ziplock bags and store in the fridge when not in use.
A note on essential oils and children, all of these oils are presumed safe on children 2 years of age and older; however please consult your health care provider before using essential oils on people of any age.
